The Crown DVD

Being one of the most expensive television shows that Netflix has produced so far seems entirely fitting to The Crown. Created by Peter Morgan and director Stephen Daldry, who also collaborated on The Queen for which Helen Mirren won an Oscar for playing an older version of Elizabeth II, season one of The Crown follows the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the intricacies, pressures, and triumphs that follow.

The Crown Series 1 Review

Spanning events from 1947 to 1955, season one deals with events such as the death of King George VI, the Coronation of Elizabeth II, and her marriage to Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Though The Crown is primarily about the Royals it also deals with British politics and 1950s society.

Starring Claire Foy as Elizabeth, and former Doctor Who lead Matt Smith as Philip, The Crown is a relationship drama that deals with gender politics and the breaking of traditional masculine and feminine roles in the highest office of the land. It's also a political drama as Winston Churchill, played by Emmy winner John Lithgow, must work in tandem with the Queen when he is re-elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. It's also a drama about the class system as one of the main plots involves the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret's engagement to Pete Townsend who was senior attendant to both King George, and Queen Elizabeth.

The Crown pulls all of these stories together to create a compelling glimpse into the United Kingdom of the 1950s: a time when the British Empire was broken, the Monarchy had a bigger influence on the running of the country, and changes brought about by the end of the Second World War were being implemented.

The Crown is another win for Netflix, and with brilliant performances, especially from Foy and Smith, and sumptuous writing and directing from Morgan and Daldry.
