Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge

Johnny Depp returns for a fifth outing as Jack Sparrow in Disney's hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean series. Directed by franchise newcomers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge isn't exactly on par with the first two films, but it is a major improvement after the lacklustre On Stranger Tides.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge DVD Review

Story-wise it's business as usual for Captain Jack as a figure from his past, Salazar (Javier Bardem) seeks revenge after Jack was responsible for him and his men getting cursed. Yes, this may sound familiar, especially to the returning Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush at his scenery chewing best), but Salazar's Revenge is actually boosted by the history of the franchise.

Case in point, the film's other plot point involves the son of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom who makes a brief cameo), and Elizabeth Shaw (Kiera Knightly, who makes an even briefer cameo), named Henry who is search for Poseidon's Trident in order to lift the curse that has damned his father to the fate of Bootstrap Bill before him. Since the Trident can lift every seas curse, Salazar is also after it.

What follows is a solid, if uninspired, entry to the Pirates cannon. With many plot points resembling the first movie, like a romance between Henry (Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smith (Kaya Scodelario), Captain Jack provides a worthy distraction should things get too familiar. While this isn't Depp's best performance in the role, he can play Jack in his sleep these days, that doesn't mean he isn't as eye-catching as ever. While some of his one-liners go down like anchors, Depp makes up for it with mad-cap physical comedy: especially in the action sequences.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge should keep the franchise afloat a little longer.
