Fast & Furious 8 Review

Considering the thematic backbone of the franchise is family: specifically, the family that Dominic Toretto has gained over the course of the series, Fast and Furious 8 throws a spanner in the works by having Dom go against the team thanks to the cyber terrorist Cypher (Charlize Theron with some truly exciting hair). The race is on for the team, led by Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Dom's wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), and new recruit Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham reprising his role from Furious 7) to stop both Dom and Cipher before they lose him forever.

For a franchise that started off as a drag racing Point Break rip-off, it continues to surprise with how much the series can change and develop to keep itself relevant to fans. While Dom's heel turn is the hook for many fans, most will stay for the buddy cop movie hidden in the films action. Yes, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham speed away with the film as their characters rivalry is transformed into mutual respect, and they get all of the best action too with Statham gleefully re-creating an iconic John Woo shoot-out.

While the vehicular action doesn't achieve the same heights as Furious 7's flying cars, Fast and Furious 8 makes do with car-jacking submarines, and causing a nightmarish multi-car pile-up. Eight movies in and Diesel and co show no sign of hitting the breaks, with at least two more movies planned. One thing is for sure, there is no such thing as too big in Dom's world.
