Despicable Me 3

After the resounding success, and seemingly unlimited merchandising options, the Minions return to their day job of being Gru's, well, his minions. After the astounding success of Despicable Me 2 (thanks in large part to Pharrel), which was Universal's highest grossing film ever until a certain dinosaur park opened for business once again, and the almost as successful Minions solo film, Despicable 3 was a no brainer.

Despicable Me 3 Review

Felonias Gru (Steve Carrell) isn't doing too well these days. After giving up his life of crime, losing all except two of his minions (the others left for an employer who could match their evil ambitions), he has just lost his job as an agent of the Anti-Villain League. This most recent setback comes courtesy of new supervillain Balthazar Bratt (played by South Park Co-Creator Trey Parker): an 80's obsessed former child star who lost his villainous role on a beloved TV show due to starting puberty.

While Gru foils Bratt's plans he fails to capture him. Bratt's character is more inspired than cynical as his love of the decade of excess provides much of the films best jokes, particularly carrying out a heist to the blatantly obvious soundtrack of Michael Jackson's "Bad".

Enter Gru's long lost twin brother Dru (also voiced by Carrell), to persuade him to go back to his glory days. Despicable Me 3 isn't as strong as the previous two instalments, but it will have its intended younger audience in frequent fits of laughter. There is enough action, decent one liners, and strong themes of family, and the positive effect of teamwork to keep the little ones happy. For the adults, there is certainly less to enjoy, but South Park fans will be tickled by Trey Parker's signature delivery as he elevates Balthazar Bratt above even the clunkiest of jokes.
